Cornell Conquers Late Models at Canyon Speedway
Kevin Montgomery, PEORIA, Ariz. (June 26th, 2011) – John Cornell was able to click off his first Total Seal Late Model Series win of the year by topping Saturday night’s 25-lap main event at Canyon Speedway. Cornell was able to move to the front after avoiding a mid-race mishap that involved race leader Tommy Hussak Jr.
Anthony Madrid worked his way up from the eighth position to challenge Cornell but to no avail as Cornell was able to cross the stripe as the newest CSP winner. Madrid, who was destined for second, finished just behind Cornell with Wayne Noyes, Lonnie Parker Jr. and James Chavez rounding out the top five.
Chris McCurdy captured the 20-lap Super Stock feature in grand fashion as he crossed the checker with Dwayne Hogan side by side. McCurdy was ahead of Hogan by a half car link with Kenny Gill in a close third.
Ty Warner picked up an extra $100 on top of the $500 winners cash for picking up his third consecutive victory in Pure Stock action. Warner, who elected to start scratch, was able to make his way to the front and drive away from the field taking home the $600 win.
James Sheppard and Michael Palmo rounded out the top three.
Joe Vlasity used a last lap pass on Anthony Madrid to pick up his eighth win of the year. Madrid, who held off Vlasity for the entire race, found himself door to door entering turn one. The two drivers would make contact coming off turn two with Vlasity making it to turn three first as he went on to win. Madrid would cross second with Trenton Setelin completing the top three.
Justin Bishop took a nasty tumble at the beginning of the Bomber Mania feature. Justin, who had all of the appropriate safety gear, was able to walk out of the hospital early Sunday morning with no injuries.
Josh Shipley took top honors in ASCS2 action with Dustin Cormany and Dylan Cappello filling the podium.
