Thornton Jr. Puts The Seal On Labor Day Weekend
Kevin Montgomery, PEORIA, Ariz. (September 5th, 2011) – Ricky Thornton Jr. made Labor Day seem effortless as he swept the holiday weekend double header by winning both 25-lap Total Seal Late Model feature events.
Thornton, aboard a second Joey Moriarty entry, started fourth in both Saturday and Sunday’s feature events making quick work to get the front and paced the remaining laps nearly unchallenged as he claimed his fourth Total Seal Late Model victory of the year matching the win total of Anthony Madrid.
Madrid would follow Thornton to the checker in Sunday nights feature while picking up a third place finish on Saturday and extending his point lead over Lonnie Parker Jr. while Thornton was able to gain ground on Parker. With the two wins Thornton tightens the chase for the championship which will be settled at Canyon Speedway’s Copper State 50 in mid November.
Jay Foster was among those with double feature wins this past weekend as he notched both days for IMCA Modified action and catapulted himself into the championship battle that will come down to the final race on September 17th.
Guy Norton, who picked up top three finishes both days, sits at the top of the standing with three points separating him and Jason Noll with Foster moving into position just six points behind Norton. A special race format will be announced for the championship season finale with the final round anticipated to be an astonishing finish to a very hard fought battle.
Matt Martinez also graced victory lane both nights has he swept the Western States Stock Car Series 20-lap features aboard Jesse Johnson’s ride. Both of Martinez’s wins came with a little controversy with late race contact with Jody Henderson for the lead on Saturday and a post race protest of Sunday’s win. The protest inspection requiring engine tear down exonerated Martinez and Johnson of any wrong doing giving the duo the Labor Day title.
George Fronsman and Daniel Romero continued the trend of back to back weekend wins as Fronsman took home the hardware for both Super Stock features with Romero sweeping Bomber Mania.
The PVR Mini Stocks made their first appearance at CSP with Bill Keeling and Bob Taylor picking up wins on Saturday and Sunday nights.
