Ward and Thornton Desert Classic Champions

Kevin Montgomery, PEORIA, Ariz. (November 7th, 2011) – Tim Ward finished off Canyon speedway’s 23rd Annual Desert Classic by sweeping a 32-car IMCA Modified field atop Peoria Arizona’s 3/8-mile clay oval.

Ward snared his fifth CSP win of the year after starting from the pole position earned from Saturday night’s preliminary feature win and went on to lead the 30-lap feature earning the Desert Classic Modified title and $3000.

Fellow Arizona Modified stars, Jason Noll, George Fronsman and Jay Foster along with Iowa’s Mike Jergens rounded out the top five.

Arizona’s Ricky Thornton Jr. beat Saturday night preliminary winner, Mike Kirby, earning $2000 and bragging rights for the Total Seal Late Models vs. West Coast Late Model match.

Thornton topped a 27 car field with Kirby, Ricky Weiss, Clay Daly and Terry Belcher Jr. rounding out the top five.

Matt Martinez used lap traffic to his advantage as he made a remarkable last corner pass beating Bo Partain to the line and earning the $500 Pure Stock payday.  Martinez topped Partain, Ty Warner, Chris McCurdy Jr. and Vance Honea to earn the Pure Stock Desert Classic crown.

Kenny Gill topped the Arizona Super Stock Touring Series sweeping the two day event while Nick Bruce and Tony Martin both picked up a $1000 for winning Saturday and Sundays Modlite “Stock 1000” Nationals with Bruce earning Sunday night’s Nationals title

Jeff Stafford put the wraps on the CSP Pure Stock Championship while Joe Saringer became the CSP Super Stock Champion.

The Stock Car Shootout will conclude the 2011 Canyon Speedway race season with racing on Saturday and Sunday November 26th and 27th.  A full weekend of racing gets under way when general admission tickets go on sale at 10am for only $15 for adults, Senior and Military $13 and children 12 under are always free. Racing will begin promptly at 1:00pm.

There will be an opportunity for race fans to get a preview of the Stock Car Shootout racers at an open practice slated for November 25th.  The festivities will kick off at 6:00pm with grandstand admission free for all those who want a sneak preview.
