Stockcar Shootout 2014Lonnie Wheatley, PEORIA, Ariz. (August 26, 2014) – There will be no shortage of action atop the 1/3-mile Canyon Speedway Park clay oval this weekend as the Rips Napa Auto Parks Stock Car Shootout 100 takes place over the course of two nights on Saturday and Sunday.

While a 100-lapper offering up a $2,000 winner’s share in the Stock Car ranks culminates the blockbuster weekend, Renegades race for added money as well with the IMCA Modifieds, Challenge Cup Sprint Cars, AMA Mod Lites and X Mods in action as well.

Both nights of racing action get under way at 7:00 p.m.

The Stock Car Shootout 100 portion of the weekend gets under way single-car qualifying and twin 15-lap Shootouts on Saturday night that will set the stage for Sunday’s 28-car, $2,000-to-win and $200-to-start 100 lap finale.

While two-time and defending Stock Car Shootout champion Matt Martinez leads the way into the much anticipated event, he will have his hands full with a number of top challengers from throughout the state including Ricky Thornton, Jr., who has dominated the Modified ranks at CSP this season.

While Martinez has topped four of eight Pure Stock main events at CSP in 2014, he still trails Chris McCurdy, Jr., by a single point in the track championship chase with Zack Madrid, Joe Vlasity and Michael Wrightsman also among the top five.

Ty Weidner topped the most recent Pure Stock feature even at CSP on August 9, stopping a Martinez three-race win streak in the process.

The Renegades will also race for $300 to win in Sunday’s finale with the top six finishers from Saturday’s feature locked into the front three rows of the weekend finale. Five different drivers have reached victory lane in as many Renegade point races at CSP including David Harrington, Jason Crowe, Tate Allen, Paul O’Connor and Joe Peterson.

With six wins in as many IMCA Modified championship points races at CSP after going five-for-seven in Winter Challenge action, Thornton, Jr., tries to tack on another pair of wins this weekend and extend his 49-point lead over Steve Stultz in the track title chase. Jason Noll, Cody Center and Ryan Roath are also among the top five in Modified points.

Challenge Cup Sprint Cars return to Canyon clay for the first time since Memorial Day weekend when Matt Lundy and Mike Welker split victory honors.

John Priest was the most recent AMA Mod Lite winner on May 25 while Bo Partain has topped two of the three X-Mod mains, including the most recent outing on August 9.

Tickets to this weekend’s Stock Car Shootout 100 are just $15 on both Saturday and Sunday, with a $2 discount for Military, Seniors and Students. Children ages 7-12 are $6, with children 6 and under admitted free. VIP passes are available for $20 each night.
